Green Building Brain — Summer Update
Hello Green Building Brain supporters, stakeholders, community members and partners!
It’s been quite a while since our last meeting and things have been pretty busy so we’d like to give you a quick update on what’s been happening.
Thanks to you we had two great public stakeholder workshops during March and May which yielded many great ideas! (You can see the workshop notes here: Workshop1, Workshop2.) In the following weeks we were able to produce a beta version of the Green Building Brain! (You can visit it at www.greenbuildingbrain.org.) Although it is essentially a demonstration application it does include most of the core functionality identified in our workshops and stakeholder discussions. Several organizations and individuals have been generous with their data and as a result we now have about 1000 building entries available in the GBB map and library. We hope you will take a look and help us take the Brain to the next level with your feedback and support!
The Green Building Brain is based on wiki principles of co-authorship so anyone who signs in can update/edit the building profiles, add photos, metrics, comments, ratings, etc. It has limited features, but as we secure more funding we can roll out the new components. Buildings represent one “content type”. You can also add companies, products, strategies, etc and link these to buildings (but these other content types are not fully structured yet and are simple wiki pages). For example, you could add your company and add all the green buildings you’ve worked on, and then if someone was to do a search for your company in the map view, all of your buildings would appear. To interact with the map, click on “map” at the top right, or click here: http://greenbuildingbrain.org/map.
June was a particularly eventful month for us. We went live with the beta during our Canada Green Building Council National Summit presentation “Green building meets web 2.0 “ on June 10. Subsequently we presented the Green Building Brain at Open Web Vancouver on June 12 and at International Facility Management Association – BC Chapter AGM, Vancouver on June 25 (view video of presentation). Our presentations were well received by the many members of the green building industry and software development community we encountered and several alliances have resulted.
We are excited to be presenting the Green Building Brain again at the GeoWeb 2009 Conference – Cityscapes in Vancouver on July 31!
see you soon!–alexg
